Four Burros Selected for All-Desert Sky League Honors
While this has not been confirmed yet in the Daily Independent, the Bakersfield Californian newspaper has reported that four members of the 2006 Burroughs Burros football team have been selected for All Desert Sky League honors (actually the Bakersfield Californian reports five players were selected, but the fifth was Bryant Lee, a graduate and starter on the 2005 Burros team).
Congratulations to Matt Ye (OL), Ben Tankersley (WR), and Brice Reider (LB). Congratulations, also to 2005 All-CIF kicker Luis Tejeda, who was chosen as the All-Desert Sky League Punter/Kicker this year.
Congratulations, also to the Honourable Mentions from this year's team. According to the Bakersfield Californian, these include Troy Spargo, Millard Lutu, Michael Gossett, Jeff Golden, Dominic Sween, and Eddie Thomas. We fans are proud of all of our Burros.

Millard Lutu Nominated for Old Spice Red Zone Award
Millard Lutu, Running Back and Linebacker for the 2006 Burroughs Burros, has been nominated for this year's Old Spice Red Zone Award, honoring 50 of the top high school football players in the United States. Each year, Old Spice selects one player from each state to receive this award. For the past two years, this honor has gone to a Burro. In 2004, the California selection was state passing champion Karsten Sween. In 2005, the award was received by wide receiver Hayo Carpenter, who set a state receptions record.
Each year, Old Spice aims to recognize football players who excel on the field, especially in key situations, and show leadership by example to other players. This year's nominee is known for his tenacious play and hard hitting, whether carrying the ball or attacking it. For the nomination, Millard will receive a Certificate of Recognition.
During the season, Millard garnered 13 solo tackles and 31 assists, including a sack and a fumble recovery. He also returned two kickoffs, carried the ball eight times, and caught one pass. Congratulations, Millard.

Receiving the 2006 Junior Varsity Offensive Player of the Year award was Kyle Smith. Matt Sanders received the JV Defensive Player of the Year award. Varsity team Managers Jessica and Mercedes received special recognition for their dedication to the team, a well-deserved award.
Varsity awards were then presented by the coaching staff, as well as by the Burroughs administration. Captains Awards went to Ben Tankersley, Jeff Golden, and Brice Reider. Justin Darley was named "Utility Player of the Year". The new "Trench Warrior" award went to Matt Ye, with "Lifter of the Year" being awarded to Brice Reider.
Coaches Stoner and Hope then presented another new award, "Champion for Life", to Kenny Blose and Robert Martin. According to Coach Stoner, the purpose of this award is to recognize the type of leadership and dedication that will lead the individual to accomplish the goals he sets for himself regardless of the challange.

| The 2006 John Boatwright Award is presented to Chris Duff by AD Don Crouse. |
"Offensive Leadership" was awarded to Ben Tankersley, with "Defensive Leadership" awards going to Brice Reider and Jeff Golden. The Daily Independent's "Burro Pride Award", presented by Managing Editor Nathan Ahle, went to Sophomore Eddie Thomas.
The John Boatwright Memorial Award, awarded since 1987 and considered the second-most prestigious award given to Burroughs players, was presented by Athletic Director Don Crouse to 2006 recipient Chris Duff.
The final award of the evening, the prestigious Robert Kelly Memorial Award, was then presented jointly by former recipients Kurt Rockwell (1979) and Burroughs Principal Ernie Bell (1976). This memorial (pictured below) stands at the gate to the Sherman E. Burroughs Stadium. Choosing each year's recipient is one of the most difficult joint decisions facing the Burroughs Student Body President, Senior Class President, Head Football Coach and Athletic Director. This year's finalists for the award were Kevin Cossa, Lee Morris, Chris Duff, and Ben Tankersley. This year's 2006 Kelly Award recipient is Lee Morris.
