Ridgecrest, Calif. -
The Burros took the Desert Sky League championship Friday night with a 30-16 win over Victor Valley at Sherman E. Burroughs Stadium. BHS (6-4, 3-1 DSL) tied with Barstow and Silverado at 3-1 overall. The Burros won the coin flip, and will represent the league as a number-one seed. Defense ruled the day in the first half, as each team only scored once.

Victor Valley got on the board first with a 14-yard pass from Nate Burnaman to Daryl Buchanan to take a 7-0 lead after a period.

Burroughs struck back with a 58-yard touchdown reception to Stephen Harlow from Derrick Dison, the first of two Dison-Harlow connections on the night. Harlow finished with 187 receiving yards on seven catches, including a 53-yard touchdown in the third quarter to put the Burros up 14-7.

The Jackrabbits responded with a field goal and a touchdown after a Burroughs fumble to take a 16-14 lead after three periods, but 16 unanswered points in the fourth gave the locals the win. Dison and Nate Briley had touchdown runs in the final frame, and Kyle Smith booted a 32-yard field goal with just over one minute to play to seal the win.

The victory gave Burroughs its first league title since 2005, and the school’s fifth shared or better league title in this decade.

Look to Tuesday’s edition for the identity of the Burros’ playoff opponent and more coverage from the game. The BHS opponent will be known online Sunday night at www.ridgecrestca.com.

Phelan, Calif. -
PHELAN — Serrano ran past Burroughs Friday night to win 34-20 in a non-league game in Phelan.

The Diamondbacks used the running tandem of Cory Diederich and Dionza Bradford, who combined in the first half for 242 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

Burroughs (5-4, 2-1 DSL) started out promising, driving 74 yards and scoring on a 24-yard touchdown reception by Daril Manns from quarterback Derrick Dison.

But Serrano answered with two quick scores to go up 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Burroughs’ defense had stopped the Diamondbacks to start the second quarter, and the offense capitalized, going 23 yards with Eddie Thomas finishing things off with a one-yard plunge to paydirt, bringing the Burros within one at 14-13.
That was as close as the locals would come.

Serrano came right back with a 39-yard touchdown sprint by Bradford to take a 21-13 lead. After a BHS three-and-out, Diederich rushed 55 yards on two plays to put the D-Backs back up by two touchdowns.

Both teams scored another touchdown to close out the first half, with Serrano holding a 34-20 advantage at the intermission.

There was no scoring in the second half, with the Burros having only three possession in the final half of play.

Dison finished with 173 passing yards, including a touchdown pass in the game. He also led the team in rushing with 49 yards on the ground on 11 carries.

Barstow defeated Victor Valley 28-14 in Desert Sky League action, setting up a crucial game for the Burros.

BHS will wrap up the 2008 regular season Friday night at home with a critical Desert Sky League game with Victor Valley. The winner of the contest will earn a CIF-Southern Section playoff spot.

Ridgecrest, Calif. -

Whether it was an acrobatic catch by Stephen Harlow, or heads up play by Darril Manns, or Steven Alva saving the day, there was no shortage of stunning plays in Burroughs’ 35-33 win over Silverado.

“It felt good. It felt real good,” said running back Eddie Thomas, who rushed for 110 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown. “They’re an overly agressive team. We just came out and played hard.”

It seemed fitting that Burroughs (5-3, 2-1), on homecoming night facing the league leading Hawks (2-7, 2-1) needed a special night.

There are now four teams with one loss in the DSL, but Silverado and Burroughs each have an extra league win to lead Barstow (1-1), who took a break from league play on Friday, and Victor Valley (1-1), who defeated Granite Hills 20-0.

A win in two weeks over the Jackrabbits and the Burros can clinch at least a three way tie for the DSL championship, depending on how the teams fare this week and next.

And Alva’s play made all of that possible.

Burroughs had gone up 35-20 at the 8 minute mark of the fourth quarter when Silverado started orchestrating a comeback.

Down by nine points late in the fourth quarter, Silverado drove 68 yards setting up a Jemeryn Jenkins touchdown run five yards out, his third rushing TD of the night.

After the extra point was good to cut Burroughs’ lead to two points, the Hawks were forced to go for an onside kick.

That’s when Alva saved the day.

In a mad dash for the loose ball, Alva somehow found himself on top of it allowing Burroughs to run the clock out.

“No. 22 picking up the onside kick finished it off,” Gracey said. “They’re both huge plays (Alva’s and Manns picking up a fumble to score a touchdown), but Steven Alva gets a dinner. I think the whole coaching staff is going to take him out next week.”

The Burros, after recording 343 passing yards against Granite Hills, this time did their damage on the ground.

Dison led the way with 125 yards rushing followed by Eddie Thomas with 110. Dison also had 110 yards passing.

Burroughs and the Hawks had gone back and forth the entire night with Silverado striking first in the second quarter when Jenkins threw his first of two touchdown passes, hitting John Bridges from 29 yards out to go up 6-0. An unsportsmanlike conduct call on Bridges pushed the PAT attempt back 15 yards and was missed.

But like they did the entire night, Burroughs answered score-for-score.

Thomas went 60 yards for a score to put Burroughs up 7-6.

Silverado had a drive stall on the Burroughs 23 and attempted a fake punt.

But when the play broke down, Kyle Smith nailed punter Darnell Diggs for a 10-yard loss, giving Burroughs the ball.

The Hawks eventually got the ball back and Jenkins connected with Bridges a second time from 20 yards out to retake the lead at 12-7 with 48 second left to play in the half.

Desperately needing to regain the momentum heading into the locker room, the Burros started driving from their own 38 with a Derrick Dison pass to Angel Leiva to put the ball into Hawk territory.

Four plays later, Dison hit Niko Hess who ran down the Silverado sideline when he fumbled the ball.

Manns managed to pick it up and fall into the end zone to give Burroughs a 14-12 lead with five ticks left on the clock.

The third quarter again went back and forth until Jenkins broke a 52-yard run to put Silverado up for the final time with 38 seconds to go in the third.

But that’s when Burroughs went on a tare.

It started with the Burros driving 55 yards capped off with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Dison to Leiva.

The Burroughs defense forced a three and out, setting up an 80-yard drive started by Harlow.

A pass by Dison to Harlow was nearly picked off by a defender. The ball bounced off the hands of the Hawk and into the arms of Harlow who was falling backwards.

Again the drive appeared to stall at midfield, when Dison took off on third and 11, going for 54 yards to the end zone.

Matt Sanders then got in the mix, picking off Jenkins, who threw a rather week pass into double coverage. Still, Sanders had to make a leaping grab to pull down the ball on the Silverado 44.

That set up Briley’s score, who had taken the ball the bulk of the 44 yards to the end zone.

Burroughs defense did what it could against a prolific Silverado offense. Jenkins amassed 297 yards in the air and another 178 yards on the ground, accounting for all five Silverado touchdowns: Three rushing and two passing.

“I know they put up some points against us, but our defense did a great job tonight,” Gracey said. “I don’t think explosive offense is fair (to describe the Hawks’ offense). That’s tremendous. Their kids showed a lot of class a lot of courtsay during the line.”

But the Burros were not to be out done.

Silverado very nearly scored on its opening drive, when it stalled in the redzone.

With fourth and five from the Burros’ 11, the Hawks elected to go for it and Blaine Graham came up with a sack on Jenkins to prevent an early touchdown.

Then toward the end of the opening quarter, Dale Fuller came up with a fumble recovery.

Shane Lloyd nearly came up with a sack of his own, but Jenkins just wouldn’t go down as time expired in the first quarter.

Just as Lloyd was about to get some help from a line backer with a head of steam, Jenkins pitched the ball away.

Burroughs will take on Serrano in Phelan on Friday, with kick off scheduled for 7 p.m.

APPLE VALLEY —

It didn’t take long for the Burroughs football team to get out of its offensive slump.

The Burros scored 20 points in the first four minutes of play en route to a 30-17 win over Granite Hills in a rare Thursday night Desert Sky League contest. Burroughs

(4-3, 1-1 DSL) got things rolling after recovering a Granite Hills fumble on the opening kickoff. BHS jumped on the scoreboard with a 25-yard touchdown reception of a Derrick Dison pass by Niko Hess.

Granite Hills responded with a field goal, but Burroughs came right back on the next possession, as Daril Manns hauled in an 8-yard pass from Dison for a touchdown, extending the Burro lead to 14-3 with 8:22 to go in the period.

Striking while the iron was hot, BHS attempted an on-side kick and recovered, which set up another touchdown pass. Angel Leiva picked up the reception, a 17-yard strike from Dison, giving the locals a 20-3 lead with 7:59 to play in the first.

Things were relatively quiet until the final minutes of the first half, with Granite Hills cutting the lead to 20-10 on a 60-yard interception return. Kyle Smith kicked a 48-yard field goal for Burroughs in the final seconds before halftime, giving BHS a 23-10 lead at the break.

The third quarter was scoreless, but Eddie Thomas added a three-yard rushing TD in the fourth quarter. Granite Hills added a late touchdown catch with just over five minutes to play, but Burroughs was able to hold on to earn its first DSL win of the season.

BHS will return home for the annual Homecoming game Oct. 31 against the Silverado Hawks

Barstow, Calif. -

“I am at a loss as to what we can do,” said BHS Head Coach Matt Gracey. “We’ve got to make better decisions; we’ve got to come out ready to play. This is the second week in a row where we’ve come out in the second half and not shown up.”

Burroughs (3-3) started out well enough, turning a Dominic Sween interception into a two-yard Frank Brown touchdown run with 5:32 left in the first, taking a 7-0 lead.

Barstow (4-2) drove downfield twice in the second quarter, scoring a pair of touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead with 3:48 left before the intermission. However, Brown picked up his second fumble recovery of the night with just under a minute to play in the half. BHS quarterback Derrick Dison then threw a strike to wideout Stephen Harlow for a 21-yard TD with 24 seconds to play before the break, tying the game at 14-14 at intermission.

That’s when Barstow took over. On their first possession of the second half, the Aztecs’ DaMario Webb went 79 yards to paydirt, giving the home team a 21-14 lead they would not relinquish. After Burroughs stalled offensively, Barstow put the game away with a 90-yard drive, capped by a Tulilo Tofi five-yard scamper. The quarterback keeper extended the Barstow lead to 28-14. The Aztecs were able to run out the clock, dealing the Burros their first league loss.

Barstow overcame numerous turnovers and a double-digit penalty total to earn the victory. Burroughs will face Granite Hills in Apple Valley Thursday evening, beginning at 7 p.m. The Burros will return home for the annual Homecoming with Silverado Oct. 31.

Ridgecrest, Calif. -
Burroughs made a late push against the undefeated Hesperia Scorpions on Friday, but was unable to make up for a flat third quarter to lose 27-24. The Burros fall to 3-2 overall as Hesperia remains undefeated, improving to 5-0 on the season. Trailing 27-16 in the fourth quarter, Burroughs punched the ball in on a nine-yard scramble from Derrick Dison on a broken play with 3:13 to play in the game. Burroughs opted to kick the ball out of the end zone and take its chances with Hesperia facing a long field.
The result, however, was a big play from Danny Reyes who went 45 yards to put the ball deep in Burroughs territory and effectively end the game.

But Burroughs had its chances.
After taking a 16-13 half time lead thanks to a 17-yard field goal by Kyle Smith, Burroughs gave up 14 third quarter points to go down 27-16. In the quarter, Burroughs committed a pair of turn overs which led to seven points. A pair of stalled drives in the quarter led to seven more Hesperia points.

Hesperia had started the game, drawing first blood with a four-yard touchdown run by Ricky Yell. The Scorpions had driven 80 yards, thanks largely to a 52-yard reception by Jay Waddell. Burroughs answered quickly on its issuing possession, driving 66 yards capped off by a 27-yard touchdown pass from Derrick Dison to Stephen Harlow to make the score 7-6. Hesperia then got a short field when Burroughs’ onside kick attempt rolled out of bounds, putting the Scorpions on the Burros’ 49. Six plays later, Ian Harriman connected with Waddell again, this time for a 15-yard touchdown pass to go up 13-6 after Irvine Martinez’s PAT attempt was blocked by Dominic Sween.

In the second quarter, Burroughs again drove 66 yards and again ended it with a Dison touchdown pass to Harlow, this time from five yards out. With the score tied 13 all, both sides had drives stall until with eight seconds left in the half, Frank Brown came up with a fumble recovery on the Scorpions own 20, leading to Smith’s field goal. The Scorpions would cough up the ball four times in the game; however, they held Burroughs to 10 points from the turnovers.

The big damage came, however, on a pair of interceptions thrown by Dison. The first came in the opening quarter, but Burroughs managed to survive when a fumbled snap n a 44-yard field goal attempt gave Burroughs the ball on its own 34, setting up its second touchdown.

Burroughs fails to capitalize against Bears in first loss of season

By Cheeto Barrera

Daily Independent
Tue Oct 07, 2008, 12:12 PM PDT >
Arvin, Calif. -

For the first time this season, a defense figured out how to completely stifle Burroughs offense.
The result was a 17-10 loss at the hands of Arvin to hand the Burros their first loss of the young season.
A normally potent passing game struggled to find a rhythm all night, thanks in large part to an unrelenting blitz by the Bears.
“Give Arvin credit, they wouldn’t go away,” said coach Matt Gracey. “But we had plenty of chances to win this game. We really did, we had plenty of chances. Now I’m not taking anything away. There’s always got to be someone to take those chances and shove them down your throat, and that was Arvin tonight.”
Arvin turned the ball over four times resulting in just three points, a 20-yard field goal by Kyle Smith at the end of the first half.
Four times, Burroughs found itself in the Red Zone, coming away with 10 points.
“The sad thing is, we really didn’t play well, but we played well enough to win,” Gracey said. “Like I said to the kids, it’s a wake up call. It’s a wake up call. We’re not invincible. We can use it as a good thing or a bad thing, but we just got to try and come back and try to make some plays.”
The first time came in the second quarter and Burroughs was forced to make a 39-yard attempt that went wide left.
It was the Burros defense that kept the Burros in the game all night.
The Burros defense forced three four fumbles, recovering three of them. Ron Douglas also hauled down an interception that put Burroughs deep in Arvin territory.
But it was one big play that marred the defense’s night.
With the ball on the Burroughs’ 47, Noel Lopez broke several tackles to get to the near sideline and raced into the end zone. A two-point conversion later, and the score was tied 10-10 in the fourth quarter.
The second Arvin touchdown was the result of a Burroughs fumble deep in its own territory.
As a result, the Bears needed just 19 yards for the score, coming on a run by Jose Flores from one-yard out.
Most of the damage on the night came on the ground, with the exception of a 35-yard half-back option pass.
But Lopez led the Bear charge for 98 yards on 17 carries. Sixty-eight yards came in the second half.
Flores followed with 56 yards on 10 carries.
Burroughs actually scored the first 12 points, only two of those were in Arvin’s favor.
The Burros fumbled in the end zone. Eddie Thomas saved a potential touchdown when he fell on the ball, resulting in a safety.
The rest of the first half into the third quarter, Arvin did all it could to keep Burroughs in the game.
Burroughs’ field goal at the end of the half was the direct result of personal foul on the Bears, resulting in an ejection. Quarterback Derrick Dison also had an interception over turned thanks to a pass interference call in the end zone, setting up the field goal.
In the second half, a roughing the kicker call on a punt gave Burroughs new life, resulting in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Dison to Daril Manns.
The score was set up by a 30-yard reception to Stephen Harlow.
It was, however, the last time Burroughs was able to get things rolling on offense.
“We just had a lot of mistakes tonight,” Gracey said. “We’re not good enough yet to comeback from mistakes like that. It was a good thing. The 0’s gone, we don’t have to worry about the undefeated thing. We don’t have to worry about thinking about how good we are. ... Like I said it was a good wake up call. I’d be interested to see how the kids react going into Hesperia next week.”
Burroughs returns home Friday night to take on Hesperia, which is ranked No. 2 in the Eastern Division.
Hesperia is 4-0 coming into the game, beating Barstow 27-26 on Friday.

Stephen Harlows inserts an exclamation point with a game-ending interception
from the Ridgecrest Daily Independent:
Number 10 with a bullet
By Nathan Ahle

Ridgecrest, Calif. -

As a senior, Stephen Harlow has seen the ups and downs of the BHS football program in recent years.

Harlow created one of the most memorable highlights in recent years for Burroughs Friday night, returning a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown with 15 seconds left to give the Burros a thrilling 23-21 win over the Tehachapi Warriors.

Burroughs (3-0) led much of the way, holding a 17-14 lead with a minute to go, but Tehachapi (1-3) took a 21-17 lead with 32 ticks left, as Warriors quarterback Kurtis Knudson hit tight end Matt Bloom for a three-yard touchdown. The score capped a drive that featured a fourth-down conversion and a 47-yard pass play against Burroughs’ prevent defense.
That paved the way for Harlow, who received several key blocks on the way to the end zone.

“That’s what big time guys do,” said an exuberant BHS Head Coach Matt Gracey. “I was proudest of our guys for not quitting; it would have been real easy to quit.”
Harlow also hammered in the final nail in the Tehachapi coffin with an interception as the clock expired, sealing the victory for the Burros.

Burroughs will hit the road Friday to face the Arvin Bears. Look for more on the Tehachapi game in Tuesday’s edition of The Daily Independent.

In the first half of Burroughs’ 48-32 win over Apple Valley, Derrick Dison completed just three passes out of six attempts.
But it was all he needed. All three were touchdowns totaling 118 yards.
He went on to complete six more to finish the night with 323 yards (9-13) with five touchdowns.

Dison helped lead the Burros team to its first 2-0 start since 2003.
“I think we played a great game,” said head coach Matt Gracey. “You know we came out a little flat in the second half, gave up 18 quick points. Other than that, we played well. ... I’m just really happy with the way the kids reacted. Offensively, it’s nuts. It happened a lot on a lot of different angles. It’s exciting man.”

But it wasn’t all him.
Burroughs’ offensive line picked up where it left off in the second half of its game against Paraclete, giving Dison time to find receivers who caught long passes in stride for touchdowns.

Stephen Harlow became the target of choice for Dison, catching four passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns — for 78, 54 and 68 yards.
“The line came out this week and blocked so good,” Harlow said. “Derrick had time. The ball hit me in stride several times.”

Dison may have had more than just accurate passing helping him. A gusting wind blowing from south to north — the direction Burroughs was traveling in the second and fourth quarters.
In those quarters, the Burros scored 41 of its 48 points.
When Apple Valley traveled in the same direction, the Sun Devils had similar results.
Apple Valley scored 18 points in the third quarter, two on passes. And of Apple Valley’s 84 yards in the air, 57 came in the third quarter.

“It didn’t hurt us as much, it was a psychological thing,” said head coach Matt Gracey. “I think if we had to keep going into the wind after that touchdown into the wind, the kids would have been fine. The kids finally said, it doesn’t matter. We practiced in there today, it’s not a big deal. Those kids are big. They get a full head of steam in that wind and it’s deadly for us.”

Burroughs also had a big night out of Niko Hess, who caught three passes for 72 yards and a touchdown.

His biggest play came in the third quarter when he caught short pass from Dison, broke a tackle and went for 47 yards, setting up an Eddie Thomas seven-yard scamper to pt Burroughs up 27-26.

Rounding out the scoring for the Burros was a 27-yard TD pass to Darril Manns in the second quarter for a 14-8 lead and a 1-yard dive by Dominic Sween in the fourth quarter to put Burroughs up 41-26.

Defensively, the Burros stepped up.
The biggest offensive threat for Apple Valley came from Daryon Mosley who rushed for 152 yards on 26 carries and two touchdowns. He had the final score of the game when he punched it in from six yards out as time expired.

But that (a total of 80 yards in less than three minutes) plus an 80 yard drive in the second quarter, were the only sustained series the Sun Devils had all night.
In the third quarter, Apple Valley started no worse than its own 41.

The biggest feather in Burroughs cap came after Dison fumbled on his own 11.
The Sun Devils took the ball over and lost 20 yards, 10 of which came via penalties and another 10 on an Shane Lloyd sack to put Apple Valley on the 31.
Apple was forced to settle for a 46-yard field goal that cut into Burroughs lead, 20-18.
“Our defense was all over the place,” Harlow said. “We had big hitters. We all moved to the ball and flying around. We had people picking off balls.”
In the fourth quarter, Harlow was referring to Ron Douglas’ interception inside the 5-yard-line.

Apple Valley had been driving, down by 15 points with time winding down in the final frame. After starting on their own 26, the Sun Devils marched down to the Burros’ 32.
On third down, one play after Jake Bell swatted down pass, Douglas came up and caught Burroughs’ first interception of the year.
The turnover turned into a quick touchdown, when Dison connected with Harlow for 68 yards to put Burroughs up 48-26.

Overall, Matt Gracey was pleased with the way Burroughs came out.
He had high respect for the Apple Valley team. Before the game, he said several of the players who would be featured in the game had experience against the Burros from last year’s 52-18 loss.
“They’re a good football team and I think we served notice that we’re not bad ourselves,” Gracey said.
Burroughs will remain at home on Friday to face Tehachapi starti
ng at 7 p.m.

Offensive Line
Burros Varsity beats Paraclete 26-20. JVs romp
"Every day, in every way, we get a little better - hey!" is the litany heard daily on the practice field at Burroughs High School. The 2008 Burros appear to take this as a challenge, rather than merely a team-building motivational chant.

In its first game of the preseason, the Burroughs varsity football team showed that they are getting better every day, and used numerous ways to prove it. Offensively, QB Derrick Dison was 10 for 19 passing, for 198 yards two touchdowns. He also carried the ball for an additional 104 yards and two touchdowns. Eddie Thomas added 63 yards on 13 carries. Receiving duties were spread between four players - Daril Manns (4 receptions), Stephen Harlow (3), Angel Levia (2), and Kyle Smith (1). Daril Manns gained a total of 120 receiving yards, with his longest being a 57 yard touchdown scamper. Stephen Harlow also had one touchdown reception.

Defensively, the Burros were led by the ever-present Ethan Greene (who was involved in a total of 15 tackles) , Kyle Smith (9), Dom Sween and Ron Douglas (8 apiece), Desmond Haywood (7 tackles and a fumble recovery), hard-hitting Shane Lloyd (7 tackles and at least one sack), and Jake Bell (6 tackles and a blocked field goal). When the offense came off the field in the 3rd quarter looking dejected after another series where it was made clear that they would not be receiving any love from the officiating crew, the defense went in, buckled down, and got the job done in short order. It seemed the spark that the offense needed, as they got refocused and dominated the Paraclete defense for the remainder of the game.

This team, as they say in their chant, improves on a daily basis. Saturday's game made it clear that they still have a lot of room for improvement, but this group will take it as a challenge to do so. - GO BURROS!

In the earlier game, the Junior Varsity squad took an early lead and never looked back. Leading 19-0 at the end of the 3rd quarter, the JV team exploded for an additional 18 points in the 4th, for a blow-out win of 37-6 (I believe). Although I was absent for the 4th quarter, there are over 300 photos of each game posted. Hopefully, every player and his family can find a photo of him with his teammates.

Burros Look Good During Scrimmages
All three of the Burros squads had some great moments during the Friday scrimmages against Eastside High of Lancaster. On the field, the players were enthusiastic and excited about their first full-pad contact with an opposing team. From my perspective, it looks like the Burros Faithful will be having a lot to cheer about this season.

Next Saturday, both Varsity and JV squads will play against Paraclete at Knight High School in Palmdale. Please check the calendar (below) for times and map links.
